Your city is served by a Volunteer Fire Department composed of about 30 members, who provide 24-hour protection. These members keep up-to-date with fire fighting measures by attending various schools sponsored by the University and Fireman's Association.
There have been 175 members since the origin of the department. On an average, we have 25-28 members. Our first motorized fire truck was in 1923, an American Lafrance. It was also the first motorized vehicle that the city of Windom purchased. Now our fleet consists of:
There is a computerized system whereby fire calls can be located by name or phone number. When a fire does occur, the firemen are notified by radio.
Caution! It is against the law to follow fire equipment and violators are subject to arrest.
Our governing body has 4 officers, we meet twice a month for training drills & meetings.
Each spring the Firemen hold their Annual Fireman's Dance, which is a fundraising event for the Department and a means for the community to show their gratitude and support.
Our annual "Duck Feed" and awards banquet is held in December.
We have anywhere from 30 to 120 fire calls a year. The calls are 50% rural and 50% city.
Feel free to visit our facilities located in the City Hall building.
