2019 Flood State of Emergency – Volunteers Needed!

The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls has provided a forecast for the Des Moines River in Windom  a crest of 23 feet sometime Monday or Tuesday. This would be similar to the flood of September 2010, and about 4 tenths of a foot lower than the July of 2018 flood.

The City of Windom will prepare for the flood by filling 25,000 sandbags. 15,000 of these bags will be reserved for protecting public infrastructure. We plan to start filling sandbags at 10AM Thursday and finish up starting at 10AM Friday.

Volunteers are needed!!  If you would like to volunteer, come to the Arena parking lot and sign-in with the coordinator. Wear pants, gloves and closed toe shoes. If you have a shovel, you can bring one of those too.

Island Park and Mayflower Park will be closed until further notice. Barricades will be going up at the Island Park entrance this afternoon. Please stay out of the parks for your own safety!

More information will be coming as we get closer to the crest period.

Rain Forecast

Cottonwood County and City of Windom Officials are aware of the forecast for significant rain for the area.  We have been in contact with the National Weather Service about the rain forecast and how it relates to river levels.  Forecasters are running models that show river levels will likely rise if we receive significant rainfall; however, they are not expected to rise to the levels we saw over the weekend.

We will continue to monitor the forecasts and river levels as well as stay in contact with forecasters with the National Weather Service.  Please leave your sandbags in place until advised to remove them.

Debris Removal & Cleanup (not including sand bags)

Property owners are responsible for the cleanup and debris removal from their property and homes. Property owners are asked to take the following steps when cleaning up and rebuilding.

  • Contact your insurance company. The City, County and State have all filed a state of emergency and are requesting funding and financial assistance but this is not guaranteed. Your insurance coverage is the best option for financial assistance.
  • Complete Property Damage Form This form provides valuable information to the City that can be used for requesting state or federal funds and tracking damage for future events. The form can be found on the City’s website or at City hall, 444 9th Street, Windom, MN.
  • Take photos and keep records/receipts. Document the work that you do and keep all receipts, including landfill. Take photos before you start demo and cleanup work. This information will help with insurance claims and may be needed for the City to receive funding.
  • Landfill Guidelines Be familiar with landfill regulations and hours of operation before loading or hauling material to the landfill. Garbage should be kept separate from demo material to avoid additional expense. Landfill information can be found on the City’s website or at City Hall, 444 9th Street, Windom, MN. Make sure to tell landfill personnel that the material is from the flood event.
